Brave Rail Employee Receives Life-Threatening Injuries During Multiple Knife Attack on High-Speed Train
A valiant railway employee who intervened to save passengers during a mass knife attack on a express train has sustained life-threatening wounds, police stated on Sunday.
Details of the Terrifying Incident
CCTV video reportedly depicts the employee attempting to stop the attacker as the train traveled between a city and another station in the county. Bystanders described a frightening 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied victims running through compartments.
The suspect, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in custody for questioning. Police declared a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have now been released from medical care.
A witness filmed the individual waving a large knife and being subdued with a stun device as he confronted police on the platform. He was allegedly heard shouting, "End my life, kill me."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the courageous employee of train personnel whose relatives are being supported by trained personnel,” stated a senior police official.
Union Reaction and Appeals for Measures
Train associations were swift to praise employees and demand more measures. One union official said he would be “seeking immediate meetings with government, train companies and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the best available support, tools and robust protocols in operation”.
A different association leader encouraged the train operator and government “to act quickly to examine security, to support the impacted workers, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.
Operator Praised for Rapid Thinking
The operator who halted the service at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been commended by union representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“He didn’t stop the train in the middle of two stops where it’s obviously difficult for the emergency services to access, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much already there,” explained a association official.
