Students Voice Concerns That Artificial Intelligence Is Weakening Their Academic Skills, Study Reveals

As per new investigation, pupils are expressing worries that utilizing artificial intelligence is weakening their capability to engage academically. A significant number state it renders schoolwork “effortless”, while a portion say it restricts their creativity and prevents them from developing fresh abilities.

Extensive Use of AI Among Learners

An analysis focused on the use of artificial intelligence in United Kingdom schools revealed that just 2% of students aged 13 and 18 reported they did not use AI for their studies, while the vast majority indicated they consistently employed it.

Unfavorable Effect on Skills

Regardless of AI’s popularity, 62% of the learners said it has had a adverse influence on their abilities and development at school. A quarter of the students affirmed that AI “makes it too easy for me to find the answers without doing the work myself”.

A further 12% said AI “hinders my original thought”, while comparable figures stated they were less inclined to tackle challenges or write creatively.

“What strikes me as remarkable is the depth of the responses,” the professional commented. “For 60% of students to say they are concerned that AI tools encourage copying rather than doing original work, that’s a very deep understanding of what your schoolwork is meant to help you do, and what the pitfalls and benefits are associated with this technology.”

The professional added: “Young people who are using this technology actually have a pretty sophisticated, quite mature understanding of what the technology does in relation to their schoolwork, which is fascinating because we don’t give young people enough credit when it comes to using technology in an educational space, unaided, in this way.”

Research-Based Studies and Additional Issues

The results are consistent with empirical studies on the use of artificial intelligence in education. One study evaluated cognitive signals during essay writing among learners using large language models and determined: “These results raise concerns about the long-term educational implications of LLM reliance and underscore the need for deeper inquiry into AI’s role in learning.”

Almost 50% of the two thousand pupils polled reported they were worried their peers were “covertly employing artificial intelligence” for schoolwork without their instructors being able to identify it.

Desire for Support and Constructive Elements

Many students reported that they wanted more help from instructors for the correct utilization of artificial intelligence and in assessing whether its responses was reliable. A program intended to assisting educators with AI guidance is being initiated.

“Some of these findings will be very interesting for teachers, especially around how much students are expecting guidance from teachers. We sometimes think there is a technological generational divide, and yet they are still looking at their teachers for guidance in how to use this technology productively, and I find that very positive,” the professional remarked.

A school leader observed: “The findings closely reflect what I see in school. Many pupils recognise AI’s value for creativity, revision, and problem-solving but often use it as a shortcut rather than a learning tool.”

Just 31% said they didn’t think employing artificial intelligence had a adverse effect on any of their skills. But, the bulk of students reported using artificial intelligence aided them acquire additional competencies, for instance 18% who reported it helped them comprehend challenges, and 15% who stated it assisted them come up with “new and better” thoughts.

When requested to expand, one 15-year-old female pupil said: “I have been able to understand maths better and it helps me to solve difficult questions.”
