Taliban Authorities and Pakistani Forces Report Numerous Fatalities in Recent Border Clashes
Fresh fighting broke out along the Afghanistan-Pakistan frontier early on Wednesday morning, with each side blaming the opposing side of starting deadly clashes.
The Pakistani military stated that its forces had eliminated "fifteen to twenty Afghan Taliban" and injured numerous others in the Spin Boldak district border district.
A Afghan authorities spokesman claimed that twelve Afghan civilians had been killed and more than 100 wounded by Pakistani firing. He added that numerous Pakistani soldiers had been lost their lives. Not one of the alleged fatalities could be verified by third parties.
Hostilities between the neighbouring countries has escalated since explosions shook Afghanistan recently, which the Afghan capital attributed on Pakistan. The Taliban reject claims that it is sheltering armed groups aiming at Pakistan.
Social Media and Armed Confrontations
The two sides are not only battling for the advantage on the frontier, but also on social media, trying to persuade the public that their side is causing more damage.
The most recent fighting follow severe cross-border confrontations over the past few days, when the Afghan forces claimed to have killed fifty-eight members of the Pakistani military and Islamabad reported it neutralized two hundred "Taliban and linked terrorists". The claimed casualty figures provided by each side could not be confirmed by external sources.
A few days of unstable calm that had persisted since the weekend were shattered on Wednesday morning.
On-the-Ground Reports and Impact
Videos allegedly of the conflict and its aftereffects have been shared online and on social channels, including footage said to be of those deceased and grainy shots from night vision cameras purporting to be of check posts destroyed. These videos have not been authenticated.
A source in Spin Boldak in Afghanistan reported that fighting broke out at around 04:00 local time (23:30 GMT on Tuesday). Another resident in Spin Boldak, who lives about a short distance away from the frontier post, said that "very heavy hostilities continued for almost five hours".
"I see unmanned aircraft and fighter planes flying over us, some of our family members are injured," they said.
A medical professional in one of the medical facilities in Spin Boldak reported that he tallied "7 bodies and 36 injured brought to the medical center", including males, women and minors.
The situation were "tense" and additional victims were being taken to hospital, he noted.
Displacement and International Reactions
A local Taliban official in the area announced that "numerous of families have been displaced since the previous evening due to the heavy clashes". He mentioned they were on "high alert" after a few military positions were targeted by Pakistani jets. He added that they had the bodies of 2 armed forces members.
In a separate night-time engagement on the western border, the Pakistani military said that twenty-five to thirty militant and local insurgent fighters were "believed" to have been eliminated.
The hostilities have prompted calls for de-escalation from foreign nations including Beijing and Moscow, as well as a suggestion from the American leader that he could intervene to facilitate peace.
On Wednesday, a UN official, United Nations representative on the conditions of civil liberties in Afghanistan, wrote on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by accounts of non-combatant deaths and displacement because of the fighting.
"I urge all parties to exercise the utmost caution, safeguard non-combatants, and abide by global regulations," he stated.
Historical Disputes
Islamabad has for years alleged the Taliban authorities of allowing the Pakistan Taliban to function from their land and fight against the Pakistani administration in an effort to enforce a strict religion-based system of rule.
The Taliban leadership has always rejected these allegations.
